Please Help Identify These Unknown
Maverick Hutchinson Bottles!

Updated: June 30, 2008

The slope-shouldered bottle pictured above has a large "P" on the base and was
offered as GreedyBay 160245919372 (thanks for permission to post your
photographs, Bruce!).  This bottle was recovered from the Sacramento River,
suggesting it may have been produced for and utilized by either the Pearson
Brothers in Bodie/Placerville, or perhaps by Henry J. Postel, founder of the
Capital Soda Works in Sacramento, California.  Per the late Peck Markota's
book,
A Look at California Hutchinson Type Soda Bottles, one of the soda brand
names Postel trade marked was "Strawberry Dew Drops;" what a great name!
Although the bottle's shape is similar to typical Matthews Gravitating Stopper
bottles, it does
not carry Matthews' base embossing, and contains the remains
of a Hutchinson Patent Spring Stopper.  This may have been a "transitional"
bottle originally produced for use with a gravitating stopper and later converted
for use with a Hutchinson stopper.
